Job Profile and Description:

Every restaurant or hotel has employees who serve guests and take their orders. There are known as waiters or waitresses. They are an integral part of any eating joint no matter how small or high-end it is, and they serve as the first point of contact for the customers. Waitresses may also help a person chooses what to eat by mentioning the house specials.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The primary job responsibility of a waitress is to take orders and serve food and beverages to customers at a dining place
  • They escort the customers to the table
  • They take the order down in a note pad, and then enter that in the computer which will be later used for billing
  • They communicate with the chefs in the kitchen and say which table has ordered what
  • They need to remember the orders of every table and serve the right dishes at the right place
  • They suggest names of dishes to the customers and guides them on what dishes would go well together
  • They garnish the items and check if everything is presented well before placing the food in front of the customer
  • They prepare the table, put new linen, set up flowers and cutlery
  • They need to check with the customers if the food is ok and make changes if the customer is not satisfied with the food
  • They bring the bill to the customers

Skills and Specifications

  • A waitress must be extremely cordial towards a customer and have good communication skills
  • She must be knowledgeable about the food and must be able to make recommendations
  • They should be organised and work well under pressure

Education and Qualifications

There are no specific degrees for this, although one can go for a course in hotel management.
